Lincoln
City 0 Boston United 0
26th December 2005
The suspension of midfielders Dean Keates and Scott Kerr
forced Imps' boss Keith Alexander into a reshuffle. He
opted to switch to a 5-2-3 formation, with recalls for
Lee Beevers and Luke Foster.
Boston began the match, and also immediately, Stuart
Talbot sent a long-range effort well wide of the goal.
This was an early indication of the aimless blasting of
the ball that was to follow for the rest of the match!
Lincoln won two corners in succession in the 2nd minute.
However, the danger ended when the referee awarded a
free-kick, while intervening in a mini bust-up.
Boston's debutant goalkeeper Conrad Logan kept his side
in the match several times, with the first happening in
the 8th minute when he reached Richard Logan's flick-on
before Derek Asamoah. A minute later, Gary Birch fired a
long-range effort wide for Lincoln.
The Imps won three further corners that were all easily
defended before Boston created their first chance. It
came in the 21st minute, when Danny Thomas jinxed down
the wing before crossing to Chris Holland. He in turn
dodged around the Lincoln defence before forcing Imps'
goalkeeper Alan Marriott into a fine save.
In the 33rd minute, it was Conrad's Logan's turn to make
an excellent save to push Asamoah's drive around the
post. A couple of minutes prior to this, Boston had tried
to claim a penalty when ex-Imp Lawrie Dudfield fell
inside the penalty area.
Birch volleyed a shot over the crossbar towards the end
of the first half.
There were no team alterations at half-time, but within a
minute of the second half commencing, Paul Ellender was
cautioned for a foul on Asamoah. Four minutes later, and
it very nearly 1-0 to Lincoln when Birch superbly laid
the ball to Richard Logan, who advanced towards the
Boston goal. He beat Conrad Logan by sliding the ball
underneath the goalkeeper, but the ball continued past
the goal and went inches wide of the post.
Richard Logan had yet another opportunity to break the
deadlock when he met Asamoah's cross. Logan's header was
saved by his namesake and the loose ball fell to Foster,
but his shot was deflected behind for a corner.
In-between Richard Logan's two efforts, Dudfield had
curled a 55th minute shot wide for Boston. Unfortunately,
chances suddenly dried up, and one of the last came in
the 61st minute when Lincoln won a free-kick. The ball
reached Beevers, whose cross was headed just wide by
Jamie McCombe.
A 74th minute direct free-kick taken by Paul Mayo was
gathered by Conrad Logan, who was having a very good
debut game. Good link-up play between substitute Marvin
Robinson and Nat Brown saw the latter fire a powerful
shot wide of the target in the 80th minute.
There was very little action of note from then onwards,
although Asamoah did sent a shot wide as the match
entered stoppage time. Overall, Boston will be the
happier of the two sides with this point.
