Chairman
Wants Changes
30th December 2005
Lincoln City's chairman Steff Wright is to contact the
football authorities regarding changes to how matches are
deemed playable when bad weather sets in.
Wright is the latest person to call for changes,
following a week of bad weather that disrupted matches on
Wednesday evening. Charlton's match at Newcastle was
postponed just 30 minutes before kick-off, meaning that
Charlton's supporters had travelled through the snow and
ice on a wasted journey.
Lincoln had a similar problem, as their match at Grimsby
was heavily affected by the weather. Although the match
went ahead - which Lincoln lost 3-0 - heavy snow had to
be cleared from Grimsby's pitch, while a snowstorm also
affected the play in the second half.
The major grievance of Lincoln City's supporters
concerned their travelling to Grimsby. Deep snow and ice
combined to make treacherous driving conditions, which
led to the police issuing a "travel in emergency
only" plea to people. Despite this plea, many Imps'
fans decided to travel to the game regardless, as the
match was all-ticket, meaning that they had already paid
for their tickets. However, many other fans reluctantly
forfeited the wasted cash and stayed in the safety of
their homes.
It is the action of these fans that has prompted Wright
to air his views. He wants a change to the criteria of
deciding whether a match is playable, to include police
advice on travelling. A very sensible criteria to
include, but will the football authorities agree?
