Cardiff
Join McAuley Chase
1st January 2006
Championship club Cardiff City have emerged as one of the
favourites to sign Lincoln City defender Gareth McAuley.
Cardiff are in serious contention for a play-off place
that could lead to an unexpected promotion to the
Premiership. The turnaround of the club's fortunes is
contributed to manager Dave Jones, who has a reputation
of being able to spot potential stars from the lower
leagues.
Jones has, according to the Cardiff local media, had
McAuley repeated scouted this season. Although no
approach has been made to Lincoln, a move could be
imminent now that the transfer window has re-opened. The
speculation is further fuelled as Cardiff only have three
recognised central defenders available.
So far McAuley, who is a current Northern Ireland
international, has been linked to Doncaster Rovers, Crewe
Alexandra, Huddersfield Town, Stoke City, Nottingham
Forest, Leicester City and now Cardiff City. Of those
clubs, it is known that both Huddersfield and Cardiff
have scouted McAuley in recent weeks.
