McAuley
Cash Blow?
6th January 2006
Following the resignation of major sponsor and chairman
of football Ray Trew, Lincoln City have been dealt
another cash blow as Gareth McAuley's £150,000 transfer
is off at present.
Lincoln had accepted a £150,000 offer from Championship
club Crewe Alexandra on Tuesday for the defender who can
leave for free in June. However, it has been stated in
the media that McAuley has failed to agree terms with
Crewe but this appears incorrect.
McAuley's agent Mel Eves told Sky Sports that :
"Crewe did make a bid but it's not gone any further
than that. It might change - I still wouldn't rule it out
completely but at the moment he's not going anywhere.
"There's still interest from Leicester and a few
other clubs but all his options are currently open.
"He's quite happy to stay with Lincoln until the end
of the season and then maybe either sign a new contract
or perhaps move on then."
Crewe's manager Dario Gradi later confirmed that personal
talks have yet to take place with McAuley.
Gradi confirmed to Crewe's official web-site: "We
hoped he (McAuley) would come and speak with us
this week, but if he hasn't come by Monday or Tuesday
then we will put a stop to it, because we want to be
making some moves. We won't be messed around there."
As The Forgotten Imp reported on
January 1st,
there are at least seven clubs interested in McAuley, who
is a current Northern Ireland International. These are:
Doncaster Rovers, Crewe Alexandra, Huddersfield Town,
Stoke City, Nottingham Forest, Leicester City and Cardiff
City.
