Decision
Time For McAuley
9th January 2006
Lincoln City defender Gareth McAuley has been told to make a swift
decision regarding his proposed £150,000 move to Crewe
Alexandra.
On Friday, it was stated in various media reports that
the deal had collapsed, however, it still remains a
possibility - just!
Crewe manager Dario Gradi is to meet McAuley at the start
of this week, to discuss personal terms. Initial talks
between McAuley's agent Mel Eves and Crewe's
assistant-manager Neil Baker have already taken place.
The outcome was for Eves to state that Crewe must
increase their offer, as "Gareth can get more (money)
with Lincoln".
Unfortunately, this does not mean that McAuley is set to
sign a new contract with Lincoln, as various other
statements exist, which imply that he will leave either
now or in June. McAuley wants a move away from Lincoln in
order to improve his international prospects. He has
earnt two caps for Northern Ireland while at Lincoln,
including his international debut in June 2005 against
Germany.
Eves confirmed: "Gareth is keen to move to a higher
level of football as it would further his international
career. I've spoken to Lawrie Sanchez and he says it will
help Gareth to move."
Meanwhile, Crewe are expected to sign Polish central
defender Antoni Lukasiewicz after he successfully
bypassed agents to set-up the deal. Should Lukasiewicz
sign, then Crewe's interest in McAuley could rapidly end.
Crewe are one of seven clubs who have been linked with
McAuley. The others are Doncaster Rovers, Huddersfield
Town, Stoke City, Nottingham Forest, Leicester City and
Cardiff City.
