Final
Attempt At McAuley Deal
14th January 2006
Crewe Alexandra are to have one final attempt to secure
the signing of Lincoln City's highly rated defender Gareth
McAuley.
Earlier this month, Crewe and Lincoln agreed a £150,000
fee for McAuley, whose contract at Lincoln expires in
June. However, talks have not progressed between Crewe
and McAuley, with Crewe's manager Dario Gradi blaming
McAuley's agent Mel Eves for the potential collapse of
the transfer.
Gradi believes that deal is being complicated by Eves, as
Crewe are not prepared to pay agents' fees. Gradi, in one
final attempt to sign McAuley, is to contact the player
direct over the weekend to discuss the move thereby
bypassing Eves.
Gradi confirmed to Crewe's official website: "I aim
to speak to Gareth to see what is going on. I hope he is
interested in coming here, but we need to know what he
wants to do when all the facts are presented to him.
"The stumbling block is with the agent (Eves)
because he wants one of the clubs to sort out his fee
rather than ask the player. We are not prepared to do
that and I don't think Lincoln want to either."
Crewe are one of seven clubs who have been linked with
McAuley. The others are Doncaster Rovers, Huddersfield
Town, Stoke City, Nottingham Forest, Leicester City and
Cardiff City.
