Imp Tipped
For International Fame
16th January 2006
Lincoln City's highly rated defender Gareth
McAuley has
been told that he could feature heavily in Northern
Ireland's future international matches.
McAuley made his international debut in June 2005 during
a friendly against Germany. He has since received a
second cap for Northern Ireland when he played against
Portugal in November. Both appearances have been as
substitute.
During the weekend, Northern Ireland manager Lawrie
Sanchez singled McAuley out as a bright prospect for his
country.
Speaking, Sanchez said: "Gareth could be a big plus
for us. He has the height needed to defend set-pieces and
to attack at corners.
"Until now he has only dabbled in international
football but I believe we'll see more of him in
future."
Unfortunately for Lincoln, another club could receive the
recognition when McAuley is named in the next Northern
Ireland squad. McAuley's contract expires in June, and he
is the subject of a £150,000 bid from Championship club
Crewe Alexandra.
Crewe and Lincoln agreed the fee two weeks ago, but the
deal is in danger of collapse. Crewe's manager Dario Gradi
lays the blame for the lack of progress on McAuley's
agent Mel Eves. A final decision regarding the transfer
is expected within the next few days.
