Chance Of
Relegation To Increase?
27th January 2006
The chances of a team being relegated from the Football
League look set to increase very shortly.
Following the Conference's decision to expand their
Conference National division to 24 teams for next season,
they are now lobbying the Football League to grant an
extra promotion place into the League. The proposals are
designed to implement the increase to "three up -
three down" for the 2007/08 season and beyond.
Conference chief executive John Moules confirmed:
"We are looking for parity with the rest of football
"From the Premier League down it's three-up and
three-down until League Two where it's four-up and two
down."
Presently, two Conference teams are promoted into the
League each season. The divisional winner gains automatic
promotion, whilst the next four clubs contend play-offs
to decide the second promotion.
Lincoln City became the first club to suffer relegation
from the Football League, when they dropped into the
Conference in 1987.
