A New
International For City!
7th February 2006
Lincoln City FC defender Jeff Hughes is celebrating
today, after becoming the latest international player at
the club.
Yesterday, Hughes was named in Northern Ireland's
Under-21 team for their friendly match in Israel.
Although he did not start the match, he did make his
Under-21 debut as a substitute.
Unfortunately for Hughes, his late entry to the match
meant that he missed the winning goal - but then again,
only those who were wide awake saw it, as it came after
just 14 seconds!
The Israel Under-21 defence failed to clear David
Scullion's cross and Nottingham Forest player Sammy
Clingon was on hand to score. This was the only goal of
the match, as the Northern Ireland Under-21 side won 1-0.
However, Israel Under-21 have the opportunity to avenge
this defeat when the two sides play again on Thursday in
a second friendly.
These two friendlies in Israel are to prepare Northern
Ireland's Under-21 squad for their Euro 2007 qualifying
matches against Liechtenstein in the spring.
Hughes is the third Lincoln City player to represent his
country this season, as Gareth McAuley (Northern Ireland)
and Lee Beevers (Wales Under-21) are already established
internationals.
