Hughes
Nearly Quit Lincoln
19th February 2006
Jeff Hughes has revealed how he almost quit Lincoln City
FC earlier this season.
Hughes is currently enjoying an unbelievable start to
2006, as he helps The Imps maintain their unbeaten run of
ten matches. Perhaps coincidence, but Hughes' recall to
the Imps' first team was ten games ago - in Lincoln's 2-2
draw against Darlington on December 31st.
Earlier this month, Hughes was rewarded for his excellent
form with a call-up to the Northern Ireland Under-21
squad for two friendlies in Israel. He made his debut as
a substitute during the first friendly but two days
later, he was elevated to the starting line-up for the
second friendly. Northern Ireland won both matches 1-0.
However, Hughes has today revealed that he is living a
dream that so very nearly did not happen.
Hughes told a Belfast newspaper: "I was quite close
to coming home at the start of the season; I was finding
it quite hard to adjust to life over here (Lincoln)."
Thankfully, the free transfer signing from Larne decided
to tough it out at Sincil Bank awhile longer. Several
months later, Hughes is now eager to sign a new contract
at Lincoln City to keep him at Sincil Bank for at least
another season.
Hughes confirmed: "If I work hard I know I can get
an extension to my contract past this summer and after
that who knows what is possible?"
Overall, Hughes has so far made 14 appearances for
Lincoln, and has scored 2 goals.
