Jamie And
The Magic Pants!
20th February 2006
Readers of a certain age will remember that thirty years
ago, there was a cartoon series entitled "Jamie And
The Magic Torch" (1976-1979).
Now, there are plans afoot to make a new version entitled
"Jamie And The Magic Pants!".
In the original cartoon series, Jamie went "down the
helter-skelter, faster and faster towards Cuckoo
Land"! In the new version, Jamie McCombe is heading
towards Cuckoo Land after he bizarrely revealed the
secret to The Imps' recent success - yes, that its
correct! The secret is Jamie's magic underpants!
Last Friday, McCombe unwisely told a Lincolnshire Echo
journalist that he has worn the same underwear during the
past nine matches and would do so again against
Macclesfield. On Saturday, The Imps extended their
unbeaten run to ten matches, via a 1-1 draw at
Macclesfield, thereby meaning that McCombe's underpants
will gain another outing!
Thankfully, McCombe has stressed that he does wash his
underwear in-between games!
As we all know, footballers are a superstitious lot, but
Lincoln City FC's players seem to lead the profession in
bizarre rituals.
The underpants superstition is the latest in a long line
of bizarre rituals revealed by City's players during
recent seasons. Strangely, this superstition is not
unique because at least one other current player - who
shall rename nameless - has shared McCombe's lucky
underpants belief. Except, he went one better by refusing
to change either his pants and socks for games!
Even manager Keith Alexander wears his lucky yellow
socks, which are from his days at Mansfield Town.
Perhaps the most superstitious is goalkeeper Alan
Marriott, who managed to accumulate thirty different rituals
prior to the 2003 Play-off Final.
Ironically, the superstitious players probably unaware that some Lincoln locals regard City's adopted
emblem of the Lincoln Imp as bringing bad luck. However
this appears untrue, as proved by the Imp's royal
connections. In 1928, the then Prince Of Wales, later
King Edward VIII, was presented with a Lincoln Imp tie
pin; the following year his gelding won The Grand
National, whilst his colt won The Epsom Derby.
Readers now have two choices:
Option 1 - the educational option of reading the legend of the Lincoln Imp.
or
Option 2 - the silly option of undertaking a "How
Superstitious Are You" quiz!
