Ex-Imp In Carling Cup Final

24th February 2006

Former Lincoln City goalkeeper Mike Pollitt is destined for the biggest game of his career on Sunday afternoon.

It is over 11 years since Pollitt played for Lincoln, and many Imps' fans are unlikely to know his name. Ironically, few Premiership fans outside of Wigan know his name but he is currently one of the unsung heroes of the Premiership.

Pollitt joined Lincoln in December 1992 as a raw 20-year-old goalkeeper. He had been a trainee at Manchester United but was allowed to leave the club to sign for Bury in July 1991. Over a year later, and having still not made his professional debut, he left Bury to join Lincoln.

Now, Pollitt has the chance to avenge Manchester United's decision to cast him into the lower reaches of the Football League. On Sunday, he will stand between Manchester United and victory in this season's Carling Cup Final.

It is a dream match that Pollitt could never have expected, especially as his time at Lincoln was mixed. A small section of fans often criticised his mistakes and he left The Imps in August 1994 to join Darlington on a free transfer. He had made 68 appearances for Lincoln.

Within 15 months of joining Darlington, he left to sign for Notts County for £75,000. Despite this, he continued to drift around various clubs, as he added Oldham, Gillingham, Brentford and Sunderland to his list.

Pollitt's career finally blossomed when he joined Rotherham in June 2001 from Chesterfield. He was a vital member of Rotherham's side, who climbed two divisions into the division that is now called the Championship.

At the end of last season, following Rotherham's relegation, he made the shock switch to newly promoted Wigan Athletic. He has since became a vital member of the side that has steered Wigan from pre-season relegation certainties to a side on the verge of European qualification.

So for those who do remember Mike Pollitt, then be sure to cheer him on when you watch Sunday's Carling Cup Final!
