Seven Mull
Over Contract Offers
27th February 2006
Lincoln City FC have revealed that they have offered new
contracts to seven players.
Although the names of the seven have not been officially
released by the club, all the players involved are free
to leave Lincoln in June 2006 unless they sign a new
contract.
Definitely among the seven are Lincoln's Northern Ireland
international defensive duo of Jeff Hughes and Gareth
McAuley. On Friday, Under-21 International Hughes became
the first of the seven players to accept his contract
offer.
McAuley, who is a full international for Northern
Ireland, has yet to agree to a new deal. It is widely
expected that unless Lincoln achieve promotion, he will
leave The Imps at the end of season under the Bosman
Ruling. In January, Lincoln agreed a £150,000 deal with
Championship club Crewe Alexandra, but the transfer
collapsed because McAuley could not agree terms with
Crewe.
Press speculation is stating that youngsters Luke Foster,
Lee Frecklington and Ollie Ryan have all been offered
two-year contracts.
Foster joined Lincoln in July 2005 following his release
by Sheffield Wednesday. Foster, despite starting his
career as a striker who has been converted to a central
defender, has played several matches for Lincoln in their
midfield. Overall, he has made 14 first team appearances
including a fine midfield display against Notts County
last Saturday.
Frecklington and Ryan are both first year professionals
and although Frecklington has enjoyed 2006 slightly
better than Ryan has, both are on the verge of a first
team run. Frecklington started Saturday's match against
Notts County, meaning that he has made 8 first team
appearances so far this season, scoring one goal. Whereas
Ryan - an unused substitute in Lincoln's 2-1 victory over Notts County -
has made 10 appearances but has yet to score.
The names of other two players, who have been offered a
new contract, are unknown. Should you wish to join in the
guessing game, then you can find the names of the players
whose contracts expire in June 2006 by clicking here.
