Bloomer
Wins Over Cambridge
28th February 2006
It would appear Matt Bloomer's career at Lincoln City FC
is rapidly reaching its conclusion.
As The
Forgotten Imp
reported last week, Conference club Cambridge United have
expressed an interest in Bloomer and asked him to attend
their training sessions. Lincoln City's manager Keith
Alexander did not stand in Bloomer's way, so the Imps'
utility player agreed to train with Cambridge.
Yesterday, Cambridge United played a friendly against
Boston United at RAF Cranwell. Boston's Peter Till put
his side ahead but the match ended 1-1 after Fola Onibuje
scored a late Cambridge equaliser. Bloomer was included
in the Cambridge United, as was ex-Imps' striker Craig
Westcarr.
Speaking after the game, Cambridge's manager Rob Newman
confirmed that he was looking to bring Bloomer to the
club in a loan deal. However, he also stated that Bloomer
was being considering for next season as well.
Speaking to the Official Cambridge United website, Newman
said: "Matt showed a good attitude and did very
well. He's a good age and he can play in the centre of
defence or midfield and the right of midfield, so he's
versatile and he has games under his belt."
Bloomer is a third generation professional footballer,
who originally joined Lincoln in March 2002. He signed on
a month's loan from Hull City and made a total of five
appearances for Alan Buckley's side. Speculation
surrounded a summer 2002 move to Lincoln City; however,
Hull required a transfer fee but Lincoln's severe
financial troubles prevented any deal.
Unable to break into the Hull first team, Bloomer joined
Telford United on loan in August 2002, where he played
alongside other ex-City players including Grant Brown and
Tony Lormor.
Upon returning from his loan spell in November 2002, he
was still unable to gain a first team place, so Hull City
released him in early January 2003. With Lincoln still
short of cash, Bloomer was initially offered and accepted
non-contract terms, beating competition from both
Gainsborough Trinity and Telford United, who were also
rumoured to be in the chase for his signature. He later
signed permanently for Lincoln.
Bloomer came to Lincoln as a defender but Alexander often
deploys him in his original position of striker. However,
this season has seen Bloomer struggle to play for Lincoln
in any position. The most number of consecutive matches
he has played during the 2005/06 season is just six.
In January, he rejoined his former club Grimsby Town on a
month's loan, where he played three matches before
returning to Lincoln.
Bloomer's current contract expires in June but he is
entitled to a further year should he make 25 appearances
this season. So far, he has made 16 appearances this
season for Lincoln.
