Lincoln City FC defender Gareth McAuley has three reasons
to celebrate tonight!
This evening, McAuley was selected for Northern Ireland's
friendly match at home to Estonia. As The
Forgotten Imp
reported on January 16th, McAuley has been tipped by his
Northern Ireland manager Lawrie Sanchez as having a
bright future at international level.
So for the readers of The Forgotten Imp, it will come as little
surprise to learn that Sanchez opted to call McAuley into
the Northern Ireland starting line-up for tonight's
match.
This is McAuley's first reason to celebrate, as it was
his first start at international level. McAuley, who won
his first cap in June 2005, has now been capped three
times in total.
This is McAuley's second reason to celebrate because he
has equalled a Lincoln City FC club record. He now sits
in the record books alongside David Pugh (Wales) and
George Moulson (Republic of Ireland), who won three caps
each, while on Lincoln City's books, thereby making them
The Imps' most capped players. Pugh appeared for Wales
between 1900 and 1901, while Moulson was capped in 1948.
The third reason for McAuley's triple celebration is that
he helped Northern Ireland to a 1-0 victory over Estonia.
The only goal of the game was scored by Ivan Sproule, who
benefited from a David Healy pass.
