The
Forgotten Imp
reported late last night that Lincoln City's defender
Gareth McAuley had three reasons to celebrate Wednesday
evening. However, this was incorrect because McAuley had
in fact, four reasons to celebrate!
The first three were equalling a Lincoln City FC club
record, starting his first match for Northern Ireland,
and thereby helping his side to a 1-0 victory over
Estonia.
The fourth reason is that McAuley was voted
man-of-the-match last night. His prize was a bottle of
champagne in recognition of a superb performance that
included playing in two different positions.
Unfortunately, there is a downside for Lincoln City
because McAuley has reiterated his desire to play
football at a higher level than League Two.
Afterwards, McAuley commented: "In order to get into
the (Northern Ireland) team on a regular
basis I need to be playing at a higher level and I will
have to wait and see what happens in the summer when my
contract expires."
McAuley joined Lincoln in August 2004 from Irish league
club Coleraine in a £10,000 deal. He has since made 76
appearances for Lincoln, scoring 8 goals.
