Premiership club Sunderland are being linked with a
summer move for Lincoln City's star player Gareth
McAuley.
Scouts from Sunderland watched McAuley play for Northern
Ireland against Estonia on Wednesday evening. They cannot
help but have been impressed because McAuley was named as
the man-of-the-match in Northern Ireland's 1-0 victory.
This was McAuley's first start for Northern Ireland
although he has won two caps previously. All three of his
caps have been earnt while playing for Lincoln City,
which makes him joint record holder as The Imps' most
capped player at international level.
Unfortunately for Lincoln, his contract expires in June
and he is free to leave the club under the Bosman ruling.
In January, Crewe Alexandra agreed a £150,000 transfer
with Lincoln City for McAuley's services but the player
rejected the move.
It is well known that six other clubs besides Crewe were
interested in McAuley. This were Cardiff City, Doncaster
Rovers, Huddersfield Town, Leicester City, Nottingham
Forest and Stoke City. With the announcement that
Sunderland are have also joined this list, it now seems
almost definite that McAuley's Lincoln City career will
conclude at the end of this season.
