Fresh
McAuley Hope
4th March 2006
Yesterday, it seemed that all hope of Lincoln City FC
keeping hold of Gareth McAuley had vanished. Now, Imps'
supporters have been given fresh hope!
Yesterday, it emerged that Premiership club Sunderland
had sent scouts to watch Northern Ireland's 1-0 victory
over Estonia on Wednesday.
The talk was that Sunderland were watching McAuley,
however, the Lincolnshire Echo are today claiming that
Sunderland were scouting two Estonian players. This is
unconfirmed, but it known that Sunderland have watched
McAuley in the past.
Further hope that McAuley will stay at Sincil Bank has
been given by the player himself. In an interview with
the Lincolnshire Echo, he states that he would
"never rule out staying at Lincoln".
Realistically, much depends on whether Lincoln win
promotion to League One. If they do, then they stand a
chance of keeping McAuley but there is little hope that
the player will settle for another season in League Two
because he wishes to further his Northern Ireland career.
Sunderland are one of eight teams linked with McAuley,
with the others being Cardiff City, Crewe Alexandra,
Doncaster Rovers, Huddersfield Town, Leicester City,
Nottingham Forest and Stoke City.
Of these eight clubs it is definitely known that Cardiff,
Huddersfield and Sunderland have watched McAuley. Plus,
Crewe came close to signing McAuley in January when they
agreed a £150,000 deal with Lincoln, only for McAuley to
reject the move.
