Sunderland:
"A Done Deal!"
5th March 2006
It seems that yesterday's fresh hope that Lincoln City
might retain the services of highly-rated defender Gareth
McAuley is vanishing.
Yesterday, the Lincolnshire Echo claimed that the
speculation linking Premiership club Sunderland to
McAuley was false. The speculation had arisen because
Sunderland's assistant-manager Ian Evans watched Northern
Ireland's 1-0 victory over Estonia last Wednesday
evening.
The immediate speculation was that Evans has specifically
gone to watch McAuley play for Northern Ireland. However,
Saturday's edition of the Lincolnshire Echo claimed that
he was watching two Estonian players.
Now, it has been revealed that Evans was planning on
watching McAuley during Lincoln City's match at Carlisle
United, except that the weather intervened.
Worse still is that today, the local Sunderland media are
claiming that McAuley's move to Sunderland is a
"done deal" according to their sources in
Belfast.
In a separate claim, the Belfast sources also state that
current Sunderland left-back George McCartney is set to
leave the club at the end of the season.
Sunderland are one of eight teams linked with McAuley,
with the others being Cardiff City, Crewe Alexandra,
Doncaster Rovers, Huddersfield Town, Leicester City,
Nottingham Forest and Stoke City.
Of these eight clubs it is definitely known that Cardiff,
Huddersfield and Sunderland have watched McAuley. Plus,
Crewe came close to signing McAuley in January when they
agreed a £150,000 deal with Lincoln, only for McAuley to
reject the move.
