Asamoah In
No Show!
10th March 2006
Chester City FC are looking into taking action against
striker Derek Asamoah, after he failed to show for
training yesterday.
Asamoah joined Chester City in mid-January on loan from
Lincoln City. The move took place after lengthy
negotiations, which at one stage seemed to be leading to
a permanent transfer. Instead, Asamoah joined Chester on
loan until the end of the season with a view to a
permanent move.
It would now appear very unlikely that Asamoah will make
that permanent switch, thereby raising the previous
unexpected possibility of him playing for Lincoln City
next season.
Prior to his loan move, Asamoah was a first team regular
at Lincoln, but scored just two goals in his 30
appearances for The Imps this season. This goal ratio had
left Lincoln's supporters increasingly frustrated at
Asamoah, whose current contract at Lincoln expires in
June.
After joining Chester, Asamoah was immediately handed a
first team role, but his ratio of one goal in seven
appearances saw him lose that spot. He has made just one
appearance since mid-February, and has been relegated to
Chester's reserves.
His plight has worsened because Chester manager Keith
Curle has departed the club. Curle was Asamoah's former
manager at Mansfield Town but Curle later left the club.
Asamoah signed for Lincoln in a £5,000 transfer in March
2005 after he and new Mansfield manager Carlton Palmer
fell-out.
Yesterday, Asamoah's Chester nightmare plunged a new
depth when he failed to show for training. Chester's
owner Steve Vaughan is livid and is seeking to impose a
fine on him. Chester are to enter talks with the PFA and
FA in regard to the situation.
Vaughan confirmed: "Asamoah's non-appearance (at)
training was extremely disappointing, so we will take
advice from the appropriate authorities about possibly
imposing a financial fine on the player."
Even although Chester could terminate Asamoah's loan, he
would be unable to play for Lincoln City until the loan
officially expires. However, should he return to Lincoln
City, and perhaps impress in training, it could encourage
Imps' boss Keith Alexander to offer him a new contract.
So the question is: "who will Derek Asamoah play for
next season?". The only clear answer appears to be:
"not Chester City!"
