Priced Out
Of Clare Race
21st March 2006
Former Boston United striker Daryl Clare will not sign
for Lincoln City after The Imps were unable to met his
wage demands.
Clare became a free agent yesterday after his 14-day
notice period to leave his current club, Crawley Town,
expired. This now allows him to speak to other clubs in
regard to signing a permanent deal.
Imps' boss Keith Alexander confirmed: "I spoke to
Daryl, but we could not meet his wages."
Alexander's interest in Clare was first revealed last
week, when a non-league newspaper quoted Alexander in
regard to his intention to speak to the player once Clare
was a free agent.
Peterborough United and Yeovil Town were also listed as
interested in signing Clare but it is believed that
non-league clubs Cambridge United or Weymouth will
succeed in securing Clare's services.
The news that Clare will not join Lincoln City could
provoke mixed feelings among City's supporters. There is
no doubt that Clare is a prolific goalscorer at
Conference level after he helped both Boston United and
Chester City to promotion to the Football League.
Unfortunately, he was unable to carry his goal scoring
form into the League and was later transferred by both
clubs.
In August 2005, Crawley paid what was believed to be a
£40,000 fee to Boston for his services. Eleven goals in
twenty-six matches helped justify Crawley's decision, but
Clare could not prevent Crawley from facing a relegation
fight.
Crawley are also trying to slash wages and earlier this
month, they placed their entire squad on the transfer
list. Currently, their strike force is led by Omari
Coleman and Gavin Gordon, who are both former Lincoln
City players.
Clare has also played for Grimsby Town, Northampton Town
and Cheltenham Town and has been on Lincoln City's wanted
list since 2001 when ex-manager Alan Buckley was in
charge of The Imps.
