Lincoln City 5 Grimsby Town 0

25th March 2006

Lincoln City responded to their defeat at Boston United last Saturday, in the best possible way!

Imps' boss Keith Alexander made a couple of alterations to the side that lost 2-1 at Boston. Striker Simon Yeo is injured so his place was taken by Imps' debutante Jamie Forrester, who was joined by Marvin Robinson in place of the dropped Gary Birch. In midfield, Steve Robinson lost his starting place to Luke Foster.

A first minute free-kick conceded by Lincoln led to Grimsby winning an early corner. Thankfully, the danger ended due to a foul on Nat Brown. Two minutes later, and Brown was involved in the action at the other end when he headed wide from 6-yards.

Local derby games are usually cagey but not this one, as Paul Bolland was next to try his luck. His 4th minute effort was held by Imps' goalkeeper Alan Marriott. Former Imp Ciaran Toner then attempted to score but his speculative 6th minute shot flew high and wide.

Forrester was next to rue his luck when he headed Scott Kerr's cross inches wide during the 9th minute. Before Lincoln could truly regret that missed chance, they took the lead. Paul Mayo's throw-in was met by
Foster, who headed the ball into the net for 1-0 to Lincoln.

The Imps' lead was doubled just four minutes later, when Brown's pass was latched on to by
Forrester. The former Leeds United striker showed no rustiness, despite starting very few games this season, to send a 20-yard lob into the goal for 2-0.

Grimsby were stunned, and it could have been 3-0 but Franny Green's 17th minute effort went wide. Two rare Grimsby attacks saw them waste corners in the 20th and 31st minutes.

Brown collected a 22nd minute caution for a foul on Michael Reddy. Twelve minutes later, Kerr saw his corner gathered by Steve Mildenhall.

Unfortunately for Mildenhall, he let his team down in the 36th minute when he fouled Marvin Robinson inside the penalty area.
Mayo duly made him and Grimsby pay by blasting the resultant penalty into the goal for 3-0.

Lincoln were by far the dominant side and had they converted all their opportunities, then they could have been 6-0 ahead by half-time. In the 41st minute, Green was very unlucky to see his shot hit the crossbar after superb work to create the space for the shot. A minute later, a foul by Gary Croft on Kerr allowed Kerr to fire in a free-kick that Mildenhall did very well to save.

Just in case Grimsby were considering a regrouping exercise for the second half, Lincoln killed off the match by scoring a fourth goal. It came in the 43rd minute when Forrester's cross was converted by the right foot of
Marvin Robinson for 4-0.

Toner tried two long-range efforts in first half stoppage time but they were to be his last contributions to the match, as his return to Sincil Bank was prematurely ended. At the start of second half, Grimsby manager Russell Slade opted to replace Toner and Justin Whittle with Jean-Paul Kamudimba and Rob Jones respectively. Bizarrely, Slade refused to allow any of his players to return to the dressing room.

The substitutions worked to the effect that Lincoln failed to exert themselves further. However, when a team is 4-0 ahead with a difficult fixture looming on Tuesday evening, it could well have been Lincoln who decided to take things a little easier.

Grimsby won two corners that came to nothing, before Green forced Midenhall into a fine save in the 58th minute. A couple of corners quickly followed for Lincoln before Mildenhall was able to deny Marvin Robinson by catching the ball from Robinson's header.

Shortly after Bolland had tested Marriott via a long-range 69th minute shot, Lincoln opted to make a substitution. The fresh legs of Birch replaced Marvin Robinson, causing Birch to be straight in the midst of the action. Four corners in quick succession came in the 72nd minute before a hesitant Grimsby defence finally cleared the ball.

By now, even the players who seldom score were fancying their chances, as Beevers showed in the 76th minute when he shot wide. A minute later, Forrester was replaced Martin Gritton, who was eager to face his former team-mates.

In 82nd minute,
Beevers did succeeded in scoring his first league goal for Lincoln City when he scored to make it 5-0. Birch's pass allowed Beevers to beat his defender before scoring from 20-yards out. This goal signalled the time for Lincoln's final substitution as Kerr was replaced by Lee Frecklington.

The score line remained at 5-0 to Lincoln, who scored more than four goals against a Grimsby Town side for the first time since October 1932.
