Cash Blow
For Small Clubs
28th March 2006
Lower league clubs have been dealt a cash blow with news
that Leyland Daf Vans (LDV) no longer sponsor the LDV
Vans' Trophy.
The first two clubs affected by the decision are Carlisle
United and Swansea City, who contest the 2005/06 LDV
Vans' Trophy Final this Sunday.
The situation has arisen because LDV has been sold
following their decline into administration last year.
The new owners are under no obligation to honour the
sponsor's prize fund. This means that the winners of the
competition will not collect a £50,000 cheque as
originally expected.
In fact, the loss of the prize fund means that Swansea
and Carlisle could lose money should they win the
competition, as confirmed by Swansea chairman Huw
Jenkins.
Jenkins confirmed: "The players are on bonuses to
get through to the final, and those bonuses are based on
prize money, so this does hit our earning power on the
day."
The competition will know be known as the Football League
Trophy unless a new sponsor is found. This was a title of
a competition from the early 1980's, which featured clubs
selected from the entire Football League.
Lincoln City contested the 1982/83 season's Football
League Trophy Final but lost to Millwall. The following
season, a new competition called the present Associates
Members' Cup (aka LDV Vans Trophy) was introduced, which
was exclusive to the two lowest divisions.
