Cambridge
Defend Imps' Keeper
3rd April 2006
Lincoln City's goalkeeper Ayden Duffy, who is currently
on "work experience" at Cambridge United, was
handed his senior debut on Saturday.
It was always going to be a tough debut for Duffy because
Cambridge entertained promotion contenders Morecambe at
the Abbey Stadium. The match ended as a 2-2 draw after
Cambridge came from behind to claim a point.
Unfortunately for Duffy, he gifted Morecambe the lead
when he palmed Danny Carlton's shot into his own net for
1-2. However, Cambridge United manager Rob Newman has
defended Duffy by stating that the blame lay jointly on
the defence.
Newman explained: "There was a lot wrong with it
before it got into that situation....I'm not going to pin
it all on Ayden.
"He (Duffy) has done himself proud
overall.....and I thought his handling and kicking were
very good."
Duffy, who is still a member of Lincoln City's youth
team, is rated highly at Sincil Bank.
Also playing for Cambridge United against Morecambe was
current Imps' utility player Matt Bloomer, who is also on
loan at Cambridge.
Bloomer, since joining Cambridge in early March, has been
ever present in their first team. So far, he has made six
appearances for Cambridge and came close to winning
Cambridge United's Supporters' Player of the Month for
March, as voted by Cambridge's supporters.
