Target Trials At Watford
5th April 2006
Championship club Watford have emerged as surprise
favourites to sign Imps' goalkeeper Scott Loach.
Loach, as The Forgotten Imp reported earlier in the
season, is attracting interest from several Premiership
clubs despite the youth teamer having yet to
make his Football League debut.
Watford, who are chasing promotion to the Premiership,
have agreed a deal with Lincoln City that sees them take
Loach on trial. Last night, he played in Watford
reserves' 3-0 victory against West Ham United's reserves.
Loach interacted well with his defensive colleagues to
keep West Ham at bay, although West Ham's strikers failed
to show much of a threat during the first half. Watford's
goals came from Clarke Carlisle, Alex Campana and Ben
Gill.
17-year-old Loach is almost certain to turn professional
for the 2006/07 season. The only question remains, as to
which club he will sign professional terms with.
In February, Imps' boss Keith Alexander confirmed:
"A few clubs have looked at him (Loach).
He's six foot four and he's top drawer but we've offered
him a professional contract and we want to keep him
here."
Lincoln are currently facing a battle to keep Loach,
especially as Watford have now made a formal enquiry.
Earlier this season, it was revealed that scouts from
Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Derby
County and Liverpool had or were watching Loach.
Should Loach depart Sincil Bank then he will become the
second Imps' youth teamer to leave Lincoln - within the
past year - for a higher league club. Last August,
defender Jack Hobbs departed Lincoln to join Liverpool in
a deal that was reported to be worth £750,000. The
transfer also includes a yet to be arranged friendly
against Liverpool.
Loach was originally a member of Ipswich Town's youth
academy but he joined Lincoln City's youth team scheme
after trials at Chesterfield and Nottingham Forest failed
to be productive.
