Lucky Charm
Stays At Cambridge
6th April 2006
Lincoln City FC have agreed to extend utility player Matt
Bloomer's loan at Conference club Cambridge United to a
second month.
Bloomer, initially joined Cambridge in March on a month's
loan, with a view to extending the agreement to a
permanent transfer for next season. As expected,
Bloomer's loan has been extended but Imps' Keith
Alexander has inserted a clause that permits Bloomer's
recall. Presently, Lincoln are experiencing a defensive
injury crisis that could cause Bloomer to receive a shock
recall.
For now though, it appears that Bloomer's career at
Lincoln City is over. His current contract expires in
June but he is entitled to a further year should he make
25 appearances this season - so far, he has made 16
appearances. When Bloomer originally signed for
Cambridge, their manager Rob Newman also spoke of signing
him for next season.
Bloomer has been something of a lucky charm since joining
Cambridge because he has played seven matches for United
but has only been on the losing side once. So far, his
only defeat came on March 25th when United lost 1-0 to
Crawley Town. Playing for Crawley on that day was former
Imps' striker Omari Coleman. Bloomer has also been joined
at Cambridge by Lincoln's youth team goalkeeper Ayden
Duffy, who is on work experience.
Bloomer is a third generation professional footballer,
who originally joined Lincoln in March 2002. He signed on
a month's loan from Hull City and made a total of five
appearances for Alan Buckley's Lincoln side. Speculation
surrounded a summer 2002 move to Lincoln City; however,
Hull required a transfer fee but Lincoln's severe
financial troubles prevented any deal.
Unable to break into the Hull first team, Bloomer joined
Telford United on loan in August 2002, where he played
alongside other ex-City players including Grant Brown and
Tony Lormor.
Upon returning from his loan spell in November 2002, he
was still unable to gain a first team place, so Hull City
released him in early January 2003. With Lincoln still
short of cash, Bloomer was initially offered and accepted
non-contract terms, as City beat off competition from
both Gainsborough Trinity and Telford United, who were
also rumoured to be in the chase for his signature. He
later signed permanently for Lincoln.
Bloomer came to Lincoln as a defender but Alexander often
deploys him in his original position of striker. However,
this season has seen Bloomer struggle to play for Lincoln
in any position. The most number of consecutive matches
he has played during the 2005/06 season is just six.
In January, he rejoined his former club Grimsby Town on a
month's loan, where he played three matches before
returning to Lincoln.
