Lincoln City Res 1 Sheff Utd Res 3

11th April 2006

Lincoln City's reserves lost 3-1 to Sheffield United's reserves at Sincil Bank on Monday evening. However, Lincoln fielded mainly youth players, an emergency goalkeeper plus four trialists!

Peterborough United provided two of the four trialists in the form of Adam Fry and Shane Huke. Both players are midfielders, who have only recently progressed from trainee level. Fry has made four appearances for Peterborough; Huke, who is Australian, has played twelve times for Peterborough. Both players have yet to score their first professional goal.

Another trialist was former Norwich City youngster Mark Baines. As
The Forgotten Imp revealed on March 21st, Baines currently plays for Ortonians of the Peterborough League Premier Division. He also plays in the Peterborough Sunday League for Royal Oak.

Baines is a 21-year-old midfielder, who is rated as one of the best players in the Peterborough Premier League.

The final trialist was Cedric Mukendie, who was originally scheduled to play in Lincoln's reserve match against Hartlepool United, which took place last week. However, Mukendie was held up in Swindon and missed the match.

With three of Lincoln City's four goalkeepers unavailable for this match, it meant that Lincoln had to play the son of their goalkeeping coach. Hence Jonathan Cherry, son of Steve, answered the emergency call and kept goal for The Imps.

The goalkeeping crisis arose because second choice goalkeeper Simon Rayner is on loan at Alfreton Town. Meanwhile, youth team goalkeepers Ayden Duffy and Scott Loach were also unavailable because Duffy is on work experience at Cambridge United, while Loach was playing for Watford's reserves as he settles in ahead of his summer transfer to Watford.

Lincoln's mix 'n match side found themselves 2-0 down before the 30 minute mark. Ryan Cresswell doubled Sheffield United's tally after Ayman Tahar had given United an early lead.

Martin Gritton - the most experienced player on the pitch - pulled a goal back for Lincoln in the 32nd minute. However, Lincoln's comeback was spectacularly halted in the 67th minute when Matthew Lawton unleashed an unstoppable drive past Cherry to make the score 3-1 to Sheffield United.
