A Shock
Return From Cambridge
12th April 2006
Lincoln City utility player Matt Bloomer has made a shock
return from Cambridge United, where he has spent time on
loan.
Only last week was Bloomer's loan extended to encompass
the remainder of the season at Cambridge. However,
injuries at Lincoln persuaded The Imps to include a
recall clause in the loan renewal. This clause has now
been activated to give Bloomer an unexpected chance to
revive his career at Sincil Bank.
It had seemed that Bloomer's career at Lincoln City was
all but over. His current contract expires in June but he
is entitled to a further year should he make 25
appearances this season - so far, he has made 16
appearances. With just five matches remaining of the
season, he will miss his target, hence it will be down to
Bloomer to convince Imps' boss Keith Alexander that is he
is worthy of another contract.
Bloomer is a third generation professional footballer,
who originally joined Lincoln in March 2002. He signed on
a month's loan from Hull City and made a total of five
appearances for Alan Buckley's Lincoln side. Speculation
surrounded a summer 2002 move to Lincoln City; however,
Hull required a transfer fee but Lincoln's severe
financial troubles prevented any deal.
Unable to break into the Hull first team, Bloomer joined
Telford United on loan in August 2002, where he played
alongside other ex-City players including Grant Brown and
Tony Lormor.
Upon returning from his loan spell in November 2002, he
was still unable to gain a first team place, so Hull City
released him in early January 2003. With Lincoln still
short of cash, Bloomer was initially offered and accepted
non-contract terms, as City beat off competition from
both Gainsborough Trinity and Telford United, who were
also rumoured to be in the chase for his signature. He
later signed permanently for Lincoln.
Bloomer came to Lincoln as a defender but Alexander often
deploys him in his original position of striker. However,
this season has seen Bloomer struggle to play for Lincoln
in any position. The most number of consecutive matches
he has played during the 2005/06 season is just six.
In January, he rejoined his former club Grimsby Town on a
month's loan, where he played three matches before
returning to Lincoln.
A month after returning to Lincoln, he left to join
Conference club Cambridge United on loan. Cambridge
United's manager Rob Newman has publicly stated that he
is interested in signing Bloomer permanently for next
season.
In the nine matches that he played for Cambridge, he
tasted defeat just once, when United lost 1-0 to Crawley
Town on March 25th. Playing for Crawley on that day was
former Imps' striker Omari Coleman.
