Striker Signs New Deal

12th April 2006

Danny Bacon, who is arguably one of Lincoln City's unluckiest players is today finally celebrating, as he has agreed a new contract.

Bacon joined Lincoln City in May 2005 on a one year contract from Hucknall Town, where he had scored 11 goals in the Conference North during the 2004/05 season plus many others in the various competitions that Hucknall featured in. Hucknall's success in the FA Trophy final saw them reach the 2005 final where they lost on penalties to Grays Athletic, who included ex-Imp Tony Battersby in their side.

It was the run of goal scoring form during the FA Trophy that resulted in Football League scouts watching him. Mansfield Town seemed favourites to sign Bacon, who was actually a product of Mansfield's youth system. Before joining Hucknall Town, he had made 18 starts for Mansfield plus a further 38 substitute appearances, scoring 5 goals.

However, a breakdown of the deal between Bacon and Mansfield saw Lincoln City manager Keith Alexander swoop to steal Bacon.

Injuries had prevented Bacon from gaining a prolonged run in Mansfield's first team, and he feels that Mansfield's supporters failed to see the best of him.

Ironically, Bacon has endured a similar problem at Lincoln, where he has played just 23 minutes of first team football. In an attempt to gain match fitness, he was loaned to Burton Albion in September but sustained a broken leg while playing for Burton.

It has been a long six months for Bacon, but as
The Forgotten Imp reported in February, Alexander had vowed to offer him a new deal. Alexander has kept his promise, and today, Bacon has signed a new one year contract with Lincoln City.

In mid-March, he began his comeback from the injury when he played in a friendly against Mansfield Town. A month and several reserve matches later, he is now vying for a regular first team place. He made his first team return for Lincoln last Saturday, when he was named as an unused substitute. Coincidentally, this match was against Mansfield!
