Honours Even At Doncaster

19th April 2006

Lincoln City's reserve team travelled to Doncaster Rovers last night for a first versus third reserve division encounter.

The Imps fielded their usual mix of first and youth team players, although this was a much strong side than has featured in recent reserve matches. There was a game for the professional players of Matt Bloomer, Jude Stirling, Luke Foster, Paul Mayo, Lee Frecklington, Gary Birch and Danny Bacon.

Doncaster's side was also quite experienced, so there was a surprise when Lincoln took the lead in the 20th minute. Lee Frecklington, the player who continues to impress Lincoln's supporters, scored the opening goal.

It would have been 2-0 but for luck and Rovers' goalkeeper Jan Budtz as both combined to leave Doncaster relieved as shots rained down on the Rovers' goal during a goal mouth scramble. Somehow, not only did Doncaster survive but they scored on the counterattack! The ball was quickly played upfield to Jermaine McSporran, who let fly from 30-yards to send a drive past Imps' goalkeeper Ayden Duffy.

Both sides were playing good entertaining and passing football. Lovely combination play in the 25th minute saw the skilful Frecklington restore Lincoln's lead when he coolly sent the ball under Budtz for 2-1. Shortly before the half-time whistle, Frecklington was denied his hat-trick via an excellent save by Budtz.

McSporran missed two chances for Doncaster, including one from close range, to leave the half time score at 2-1 to Lincoln City's reserves.

McSporran won a second half penalty for Doncaster when his pace saw him elude Foster. As he continued into the penalty area, his run was abruptly stopped by a pull, to conceded the penalty.

Paul Green stepped up to slot the ball to the left of Duffy, only for the referee to rule out the goal. At the second attempt, Green kept his nerve to this time send the ball to Duffy's right to make the score 2-2.

This match was certainly a far cry from Lincoln's first team match against Bury, as chances continued to be created for both sides via some good passing moves. One such chances saw Birch almost score but as he shaped to tap the ball into the net, he was superbly tackled by Green.

In the 78th minute, Ian Snodin's pass found Adam Brown, but the Doncaster striker hit the post. The lively McSporran continued to give The Imps' defence the run around but his cracking overhead kick was well saved by Duffy.

At the other end, a Owain Warlow cross was missed by Mayo, who should have scored from close range. McSporran and Brown combined to create a chance for Craig Nelthorpe, but thankfully, his shot rebounded off the post.

Overall, an excellent match and a fair result.
