McAuley
Given PFA Honour
24th April 2006
Lincoln City's defender Gareth McAuley has been honoured
by his fellow professionals for an award.
The annual Professional Footballers' Association awards
took place on Sunday evening, which includes the naming
of a divisional team of the season. Selected for the
League Two Team of the Season was McAuley.
This recognition is highly deserved, as he is one of the
best defenders in the lower divisions. His form has this
season earnt him two international caps for Northern
Ireland - bringing his total to three caps, which makes
him the joint most capped player in the history of
Lincoln City FC!
It is not just his fellow League Two players who have
noticed McAuley's consistent skill. Unfortunately, eight
clubs have taken an interest in signing McAuley this
season, with Sunderland and Leicester City heading the
queue.
In January, McAuley rejected a £150,000 transfer to
Crewe Alexandra. His contract at Lincoln City expires in
June, but McAuley has been offered a new deal. However,
it is believed that only promotion will give Lincoln a
realistic prospect of keeping McAuley for next season.
McAuley joined Lincoln in August 2004 after Lincoln
agreed a £10,000 fee with Irish League club Coleraine
for his services. At the time, he was already
highly-rated as he was a Northern Ireland "B"
International.
Imps' boss Keith Alexander had to wait eight months
before finally signing his man. Even then, only Stockport
County's reluctance to pay the £10,000 asking fee paved
the way for McAuley to join Lincoln.
McAuley joined Coleraine from Crusaders in July 2002; he
has also played for Linfield and Ballyclare Comrades.
The eight clubs who have been linked to McAuley during
this season are Cardiff City, Crewe Alexandra, Doncaster
Rovers, Huddersfield Town, Leicester City, Nottingham
Forest, Stoke City and Sunderland.
