Shrewsbury
Aim To Steal Imps' Place
28th April 2006
As the 2005/06 season draws to a conclusion, the nerves
of supporters are guaranteed to be frayed - a situation
that Lincoln City's supporters are quite used to!
Joining Lincoln City's supporters in this season's
nervous breakdown clinic are Shrewsbury Town's fans.
However, by 5pm on Saturday afternoon, one set of
supporters could have booked themselves out of the
clinic, albeit straight into to the disappointment
clinic!
Presently, Lincoln City occupy the final play-off
qualification spot in League Two but merely because they
have scored more goals than Peterborough United.
Theoretically, with just two games remaining, a total of
nine clubs could end the season in seventh spot.
Shrewsbury's play-off ambitions are hanging by a thread
but their manager Gary Peters believes that his side
could manage a shock inclusion in the play-offs. To do
so, they will have to win both their final matches and
hope that other clubs lose theirs.
Peters' optimism mainly stems from the fact that
Shrewsbury entertain Lincoln on Saturday. A win would
place Shrewsbury one point behind Lincoln, who clearly
also require a victory.
Pondering the maths, Peters said: Bristol Rovers
are at Rochdale......Peterborough are away to Leyton
Orient and Darlington are away to Wycombe. Its even
tougher for Lincoln because theyre away to us.
At the end of play, if you have four home wins in
those games wed be a point off the play-offs going
into the last day."
Shrewsbury have over preformed this season, especially
considering that they are down to just seventeen players
at the club. Over the past couple of weeks, several
senior professionals have been released from the club,
prompting fears among supporters that the decision could
cost Shrewsbury promotion.
Two seasons ago, Shrewsbury were playing in the
Conference, so their rebuilding exercise continues. They
now have several talented players among their small
squad, including Colin McMenamin who is their leading
goal scorer with ten goals this season.
Arguably the most talented of their players is goalkeeper
Joe Hart, who was this week named in the PFA's League Two
Team of the Season. Hart is rated at £1 million and has
attracted interest from Crewe Alexandra.
Ironically, had events turned out differently during
January, Imps' defender Gareth McAuley could have been
playing alongside Hart at Crewe. Instead, both players
stayed at their respective League Two clubs and received
recognition in the PFA's Team.
Lincoln have one of the division's most in form strikers
on their books, in the form of Jamie Forrester. That
could have changed this week because Forrester's loan
period from Bristol Rovers had expired and they were
reluctant to allow him to stay at Sincil Bank. Thankfully
both clubs were able to work out a deal that sees
Forrester stay at Lincoln before signing a permanent
contract in July.
These two clubs first met on August 26th 1950 when
Lincoln recorded a 2-1 victory at Shrewsbury. Later that
season, Lincoln completed the double via a 5-0 victory at
Sincil Bank. Please click here for a historical round up of the
results between these two clubs.
