Euro Bound
Hughes
8th May 2006
Lincoln City's defender Jeff Hughes is once again Euro
bound this week.
The Northern Ireland Under-21 squad to face Liechtenstein
on Wednesday has this morning been finalised. As
expected, Hughes has retained his place in the squad.
Should Hughes play, as expected, then this will be his
fifth Northern Ireland Under-21 cap. All of his four
previous caps have been won during the past three months.
Hughes has yet to taste defeat while wearing a Northern
Ireland Under-21 shirt.
Northern Ireland entertain Liechtenstein in a European
Under-21 Championship qualifying tie. Last month, they
defeated Liechtenstein by a 4-1 score line, which almost
makes this second leg match a formality in regard to
qualification. However, things could have been disastrous
in Liechtenstein because an uneven pitch caused Hughes'
back pass to goalkeeper Michael McGovern to bobble before
entering the net for a 1-0 lead to Liechtenstein!
The winners of this tie will face Romania and Germany in
the next stage of qualification for next year's
tournament.
