Grimsby:
Take Two!
16th May 2006
Lincoln City FC face a make or break match at Grimsby
Town tonight.
Victory is essential if The Imps are not to spend yet
another season in League Two. Only a victory can prevent
that from happening because Grimsby currently lead 1-0 on
aggregate.
To ensure qualification at the end of the ninety minutes,
The Imps require a win by a margin of two goals. However,
even a one goal victory could see them progress because
the match would enter extra-time and a penalty shoot-out
should the aggregate score line remain the same at the
end of extra time.
This is Lincoln City's fourth consecutive play-off
appearance. The omens are good for Lincoln because no
side has made four consecutive play-off appearances
without winning promotion at the fourth attempt. Only
Ipswich Town and Birmingham City have qualified for four
consecutive play-offs and both won their respective
finals in 2000 and 2002.
Lincoln look set to make at least one change from the
side that lost the first leg. Striker Simon Yeo should
make his first start since suffering knee ligament damage
in mid-March.
These two clubs first met in the FA Cup of 1884/85
season, when Grimsby defeated Lincoln on 3rd January 1885
via a 1-0 score line. Click here for a historical round-up of all the
