Predictions: Who Is Leaving (A - L)

18th May 2006

It is that time of the year again, when Lincoln City FC's current squad find out if they have played their last game for The Imps.

For the first time in several seasons, a large number of the current squad remain under contract. Usually, the entire squad is left fretting over contract offers!

Earlier this year, it was revealed that ten of the present youth team have been offered professional contracts for next season. With this mind, several of the current first team squad could be released because otherwise, Lincoln could start the 2006/07 season with 36 professionals on their books.

So who is likely to stay and who is likely to leave? The Forgotten Imp presents its predictions:

Keith Alexander (manager) - We start with Lincoln's manager Keith Alexander. Although under contract, his future could be in doubt after he refused to confirm his position for next season. However, since he is under contract then the following predictions are based on Alexander remaining as Lincoln City manager.

Derek Asamoah (profile) - Derek Asamoah signed for Lincoln in March 2005 for £5,000 from Mansfield Town and is one of the most skilful players that Sincil Bank has seen in recent years. Unfortunately, as he is classed as a striker and this where he fails to shine, as he has managed just two goals for The Imps in 43 appearances.

As a result, he was loaned to Chester City in January, where he impressed.

Prediction: Released. Asamoah is likely to sign permanently for Chester.

Gary Birch (profile) - Gary Birch promised much at the start of the season, having signed in July 2005 following his release from Kidderminster Harriers.

Despite losing his first team place in January, he remained Lincoln's leading scorer until the final match of the season. During the 2005/06 season, Birch scored 10 goals from 43 appearances.

A difficult one to predict but his early season's performances should mean that he is offered a new contract.

Prediction: Should stay but could be a shock release.

Matt Bloomer (profile) - Matt Bloomer is one of the club's longest serving players yet has never really established himself at Sincil Bank.

His versatility makes him a good squad player but since several other utility players have now joined, Bloomer is struggling. He had a brief run in the first team during the early part of the season before losing his place altogether.

Last year, his contract was renewed with a clause that if he made 25 appearances, he would be entitled to a new one-year deal. He failed to reach this target and has made just 14 appearances for Lincoln City during this season.

Bloomer spent two months on loan at Conference club Cambridge United, where he became a fans' favourite.

Prediction: Released. Bloomer is likely to join Cambridge United in a permanent deal.

Chris Gordon - Left-back Chris Gordon is something of a mystery. He signed professional terms last May and began the season on loan at Gainsborough Trinity. He has not been heard of since September; he does not play even play in the reserve matches.

Prediction: Released - assuming that he is still at Lincoln City!

Franny Green (profile) - Franny Green has been a first team regular for much of his three seasons at Sincil Bank.

However, at the start of this season, Green was dropped from the first team. This prompted him to speak out in the press and he later joined county rivals Boston United in a loan deal.

He returned from Boston in January to reclaim his first team place at Lincoln. A quick and skilful player but one who sadly fails to score a sufficient number of goals.

Prediction: Released. Too much history and too many misses will probably see him leave Lincoln.
