Boston Snap
Up Green
18th May 2006
Lincoln City's striker Franny Green has chosen to leave
Lincoln City in favour of a move to county rivals Boston
United.
Green was one of several out of contract players at
Sincil Bank. As yet, it is unclear whether he has
rejected a new contract at Lincoln or whether The Imps
were planning on releasing anyway.
Either way, Green has agreed to join Boston United, where
he spent a proportion of the 2005/06 season on loan.
During his time at Boston, he scored once in six
appearances.
Boston United's Director of Football, Jim Rodwell
confirmed: "He (Green) knows the manager
and most, if not all the players and he cannot wait to
get started."
Green became the first player to be bought by Lincoln
City in over two years, when he signed in September 2003
on a 2½ year contract. The fee has been quoted anywhere
between £25,000 and £75,000 and included various
clauses.
The transfer ended Lincoln manager Keith Alexander's
3-month chase for Green that appeared to have prematurely
ended in summer 2003 when Peterborough's manager Barry
Fry rejected an original £25,000 bid.
Alexander knew of Green's potential having managed him at
their former club, Ilkeston Town, where Green began his
career in August 1997. In March 1998, Alexander sold him
to Peterborough in a £25,000 deal from Ilkeston. He went
on to make 126 appearances for Peterborough - although
half were substitute appearances - scoring 16 goals.
Since joining Lincoln, he has excited supporters with his
pace but often lacks the goal scoring finish that is
expected of a striker.
Green spent most of his Lincoln career as a first choice
player but lost his place at the start of the 2005/06
season. This led to him speaking out in the press and he
later joined Boston on loan in November 2005. However, he
was recalled to Lincoln in January, and went on to
reclaim his first team place.
Overall, Green made 116 appearances for Lincoln, scoring
20 goals.
The transfer will be officially completed on July 1st
when Green's current Lincoln City contract expires.
