Bury's Draw
Explained
26th May 2006
On April 15th, The Forgotten Imp reported here that "if Lincoln City do
qualify for this season's play-offs, it will because
other clubs have messed things up more than The Imps have
managed to!".
This prediction was as a result of Lincoln City
struggling to a draw with relegation threatened Bury at
Sincil Bank. It now appears that we unfairly blamed
Lincoln - actually that is being very generous, as
Lincoln really did mess it up that day!
However, in connection with their match at Lincoln, Bury
were yesterday fined £5,000 and deducted a point. The
reason being was that they fielded Colin Marrison, who
was ineligible for the match because his loan period from
Sheffield United had expired the previous week.
The irony is that Bury were winning 1-0 when Marrison
entered the play as a 57th minute substitute. An 85th
minute equaliser from Lee Frecklington saved Lincoln's
blushes.
Even if Lincoln had lost or won the match, then their
final league placing would not have been affected. Hence
Lincoln would still have played Grimsby Town in the
play-off semi-finals.
Likewise, the deduction of the point makes no difference
to Bury's final league placing, although some might argue
that the psychology surrounding subsequent fixtures will
have been influenced by this result.
