Grimsby
Thank Lincoln Ahead of Cheltenham
26th May 2006
If Grimsby Town defeat Cheltenham Town in the League Two
Play-off final then they could owe a consider debt of
gratitude to Lincoln City.
Keith Alexander, in one of his last acts as Lincoln City
manager, has come to the aid of Grimsby over their
striker Gary Jones' sending off during the second leg of
the play-off semi-final between the two clubs.
Jones' was dismissed during the final seconds of the
match, for an elbow in the face of Imps' defender Gareth
McAuley. Although a clear elbow, Jones denied that the
challenge for the header was malicious. Lincoln also
agreed and spoke up for Jones.
Speaking, Jones confirmed: "I would like to thank
Russell (Slade) and Graham (Rodger),
all the staff, Keith Alexander and everyone at Lincoln
who has helped with my appeal."
The outcome was that his red card was overturned and
Jones is now free to face Cheltenham in the final.
