Pick Any
One From 112 Plus!
29th May 2006
Lincoln City FC's search for a new manager will begin in
earnest this week, following Keith Alexander's decision
to leave the club.
A quick look at the League Managers' Association's
website shows 112 unemployed managers who have registered
their interest in finding a new position. When one
considers the non-registered people such as players,
coaches etc, then the potential pool to select from is
huge.
So join us, as The Forgotten Imp takes a look at some of the
early candidates (in no particular order).
Steve
Bleasdale
- Lincoln have already received over twenty applications;
among these is one from Bleasdale, who is keen for a
swift return to management.
Bleasdale left Peterborough United at the end of last
season, after a short caretaker manager's role. He lost
nine of his seventeen games as manager; an inexperienced
manager but a good coach.
Mick
Harford -
Lincoln's supporters already know about their legendary
striker Mick Harford. He is one of the favourites to gain
the job, but he has not impressed during his two previous
managerial roles at Nottingham Forest and Rotherham
United.
Harford would be a popular choice but could also prove a
gamble.
John
Ward -
Another legendary former Imps' striker, and arguably
Lincoln City's fans' number one choice for the post.
Unfortunately, he already has a job at Cheltenham Town
and has just guided them to promotion to League One. Ward
also assisted former Imps' manager Graham Taylor at
England.
Ward would be an ideal choice but he could now require a
lot of tempting to leave Cheltenham.
Danny
Wilson -
A hugely experienced manager, who has enjoyed success at
several smaller clubs. His biggest achievement is guiding
Barnsley into the Premiership before switching to
Sheffield Wednesday.
Wilson's CV stands out and he could well be the man for
The Imps. He would prove a popular choice as manager. An
excellent candidate for the post.
Steve
Thompson
- The former Lincoln City manager, who was succeeded by
Keith Alexander, is bound to fancy his chances of another
crack at the reigns.
Also a popular ex-Imps' player, who shows good knowledge
of the game. However, Lincoln's supporters have mixed
views on handing him another chance despite him being
extremely unlucky to leave Lincoln in the first place.
Thompson is another who is bound to be given serious
consideration for the post. Lincoln could do a lot worse
than Thompson.
Brian
Little -
Another manager who is vastly experienced at all levels
of the game. Earlier this month, he departed Tranmere
Rovers after they just escaped relegation. However, the
previous season, he guided Tranmere into the play-offs
and was very unlucky to see his side miss out promotion.
Little is another manager who Lincoln City should give
serious consideration to.
John
Schofield
- John Schofield is Lincoln's current caretaker-manager
and a former Imps' player. He has done well with the
youth team but is inexperienced at first team level.
Schofield has stated that he is undecided if he wants to
apply for the position. These are often words said by
people who wish to remain at the club but have one eye on
the vacant post yet fear being seen as a threat by the
new manager should their job application fail.
Schofield would be a huge gamble but then, Watford took a
huge gamble last season by appointing Aidy Boothroyd;
look where Watford are now!
So far, we have covered seven possible candidates. There
are many, many more, and we will continue to look others
during the next few days.
