Alexander
To Peterborough: Timeline
30th May 2006
In a rather unsurprising move, former Lincoln City
manager Keith Alexander was today officially named as
Peterborough United's new manager.
The
Keith Alexander to Peterborough United timeline:
April 2005
Internet message boards become awash with rumours linking
Alexander and several current Lincoln City players to
Peterborough United, where owner Barry Fry is retiring as
United's manager. The stories are denied by all involved.
May 2005
On the eve of Lincoln City's play-off final against
Southend United, it is announced that Alexander has been
rewarded with a new contract. This contract also includes
a substantial compensation clause for Lincoln should
another club poach Alexander from The Imps.
August 2005
The new season kicks off with Alexander still in charge
of Lincoln City. However, several key players departed
during the summer, which forced an extensive rebuilding
of the Imps' squad.
January 2006
Alexander and his assistant-manager Gary Simpson are
placed "on leave" by Lincoln City's board of
directors. After several days of uncertainty, Alexander
is reinstated but Simpson and two board members later
depart the club.
May 9th 2006
As Lincoln City prepare to face Grimsby Town in the first
leg of the play-off semi-final, it is reported in the
Daily Mirror that Fry wishes to meet Alexander for talks
in relation to the Peterborough United manager's job,
which is vacant yet again.
May 10th 2006
Alexander dismiss the recent media story linking him to
Peterborough. Fry is also adamant that Alexander will not
join Peterborough but admits that he would like him to.
Fry says: "There is no way we will be appointing
someone who is under contract at another club because we
cannot afford to pay any compensation......If he was free
I'd love to interview him."
May 16th 2006
Grimsby defeat Lincoln over two legs to condemn The Imps
to yet another season in League Two. Worringly, during
the post match interviews, Alexander refuses to confirm
whether he will stay at Sincil Bank even though he
remains under contract.
May 18th 2006
Speculation appears to settle down as Alexander holds
talks with chairman Steff Wright over which players he
wishes to offer new contracts to. Six players are
released by Alexander, as he plans for the new season.
May 23rd 2006
Crewe Alexandra and Bristol City vie to sign Jamie
McCombe, who is Lincoln's newly crowned Player of the
Season . A minimum release fee clause in McCombe's
contract has sparked this chase, with media reports in
Crewe stating that the transfer fee will be just £5,000.
May 24th 2006 - am.
Alexander states that McCombe will be a hard player to
replace but somehow, he will manage to do so. He also
speaks of signing former Newcastle United striker Kevin
Gall to help improve Lincoln's goal scoring ratio for
next season.
May 24th 2006 - pm.
Alexander and Wright hold a press conference where
Alexander confirms that he is leaving Lincoln City.
Wright talks of "pastures new" for Alexander.
Later, Alexander once again denies that he is going to
Peterborough but does admit that several clubs are
interested in him.
May 25th 2006 - am.
Fry admits that he wishes to interview Alexander.
Speaking, Fry says: "He will be interviewed along
with six others.
"The news from Lincoln took us all by surprise, but
I have contacted Keith and he will be seeing us over the
weekend."

May 30th to reveal the new manager.
