World Cup Preview: Group C

3rd June 2006

The FIFA 2006 World Cup kicks-off on June 9th in Germany, so
The Forgotten Imp is here to provide a concise guide to the tournament; we continue by looking at Group C.

Group C will provide plenty of interest for the neutrals who enjoy watching countries making their World Cup debuts. Two debutantes in this year's World Cup Finals are Serbia & Montenegro and the Ivory Coast. They have been drawn in Group C along with Argentina and the Netherlands.

Argentina - In any World Cup Final, the favourite to win the tournament is Brazil. Yet, this year, Argentina should theoretically be installed as the favourite. The bookmakers do not agree and rate Argentina at World Cup odds of 9/1 to win the tournament.

The reason why Argentina should be considered as the favourite is because they thrashed Brazil in their South American qualifying group.

Argentina's current squad are masters of the passing game as demonstrated by their out-footballing of Brazil during their 3-1 victory. The only weakness in the current Argentina side is their inexperience because they are a young squad.

A player to watch out for 18-year-old winger Leo Messi of Barcelona. Messi is hailed as the new Maradona but his World Cup could be blighted by injury. Reports vary as to his fitness levels but Messi is likely to be Argentina's secret match winner.

Also look out for Chelsea's striker Hernan Crespo, who has wonderful talent even if he has struggled at Chelsea.

Argentina are quoted at 2/7 to qualify from World Cup Group C and should do so with both ease and style.

Holland (Netherlands) - The Netherlands are also experts at the passing game of football, which is why Group C should prove highly entertaining for connoisseurs of the beautiful game.

Head coach Marco Van Basten has all but formed a new squad from the one that took part in the European 2004 Championships. Many of the current squad are unheard of outside of Holland, so it is difficult to predict how Holland will fare. Even Van Basten does not know what to expect from his squad but the bookmakers have rated them as 2/5 to qualify from Group C.

Players to look out for are the entire Dutch team, who could all become household names!

Ivory Coast - This is Ivory Coast's first ever World Cup Finals and the country is eagerly anticipating the competition. Presently, the country is in the midst of a civil war but hostilities have been suspended due to the World Cup!

Anyone who watched the African Nations' Tournament earlier this year will have seen the Ivory Coast lose the final to Egypt via a penalty shoot-out. It was an entertaining match; so again, another indicator that Group C matches are not to be missed. Ivory Coast are quoted at World Cup odds of 9/4 to qualify from Group C.

A player to watch out for is Chelsea's Didier Drogba, who is by far the most famous member of Ivory Coast's squad.

Serbia & Montenegro - This is Serbia & Montenegro's first and last World Cup, for last week, the two states voted to separate into independent countries.

Serbia & Montenegro are rated as 15/8 to qualify from Group C but could shock either of the inexperienced sides of Argentina and Holland.

They had a superb qualification by finishing winners of their group thereby pushing Spain into second place. The team is built on a solid defence that conceded just one goal in their ten qualifying matches.

A player to look out for defender Mladen Krstajic, who has yet to play on a losing Serbia & Montenegro side.

Serbia & Montengero could prove the surprise team of this year's tournament just as Cameroon, Croatia and South Korea have done in World Cup tournaments of the past.
