World Cup
Preview: Group D
5th June 2006
The FIFA 2006 World Cup kicks-off on June 9th in Germany,
so The
Forgotten Imp
is here to provide a concise guide to the tournament; we
continue by looking at Group D.
Due to the talent contrast between two of the four teams
in the group, it seems very unlikely that Group D will
provide any shocks. The group consists of Angola, Iran,
Mexico and Portugal.

Portugal - Portugal could prove
surprise winners of the 2006 World Cup. Maybe that is an
optimistic forecast but the Portuguese have the talent to
reach the Final.
The downside to Portugal is that they are prone to
catching the Spanish disease, which is the mysterious
medical condition that causes the Spanish team to
underachieve at every tournament.
If Portugal can overcome their tendency to lose
unexpectedly, then the World Cup odds of 25/1 for
Portugal to win the tournament appear very generous. The
bookmakers have priced Portugal at 1/7 to qualify from
Group D.
Their qualification to the finals saw them score 35 goals
with only 5 against. If they can continue that form, then
no country will be able to stop Portugal.
A player to watch for is unsurprisingly striker Pedro
Pauletta, who scored 11 of Portugal's 35 qualification
goals. Nuno Gomes is also another very talented forward
in Portugal's squad.

Mexico - Mexico are one of those
countries who embody the World Cup experience. They
provide flair and colour to the tournament but they
seldom manage to progress beyond the second round.
This year, Mexico should progress to the next round with
ease, as defeats against either Angola or Iran seem
unlikely. In fact, these fixtures could provide a
plethora of goals because Mexico know only one way to
play; that is attack, attack and attack!
The fixture between Mexico and Portugal has all the
ingredients to became a classic World Cup encounter and
certainly, it should prove one of the highlights of this
year's tournament. A match not to be missed.
A player to watch out for Rafael Marquez, who has
impressed many during his games for Barcelona. Bolton
Wanderers' supporters will also be familiar with striker
Jared Borgetti.
Mexico are priced at world cup odds of 2/9 to qualify
from Group D.

Iran - International politics could
dictate the fate of Iran, as there is considerable doubt
whether they will be able to compete in the tournament.
With less than a week to go, it now seem likely that Iran
will field a team.
One thing that could favour Iran is that four of their
players play in the German league. That said, an early
exit at the group stage still beckons but they are quoted
at 11/4 to qualify.
A player to watch for is striker Ali Daei, who has scored
109 goals in 147 appearances. He is now 37-years-old, so
these could prove Daei's final matches for Iran.

Angola - Angola are making their
World Cup debut after a shock qualification victory over
Nigeria. Despite that statistic, Angola are unlikely to
set the World Cup alight in the same manner that Nigeria
have done in the past.
Little is known about this African team except that this
is the best Angolan team for some considerable time.
About the only player who is known is Benfica's striker
Pedro Mantorras. One player to watch for is Rui Marques
who plays in England with Hull City.
A group round exit is expected for Angola, which is
reflected in their odds of 4/1 to qualify from Group D.
