Managerial
Merry-Go-Round Is Turning!
11th June 2006
Unfortunately, Lincoln City FC have not yet released
details as to when a new manager will be appointed nor
have they revealed who has applied for the post although
they have received at least 30 applications.
However, while The Imps' board consider these applicants,
the situation is becoming clearer, but only by default,
for a number of these applicants are seeking work
elsewhere. We have a quick round-up as to the latest
managerial news related to other clubs whose situation
details are reaching the press.
It is expected that League Two club Notts County will
name their new manager on Monday. According to the press,
Notts County have narrowed their choice down to Ian
McParland, Mick Harford, Keith Curle and Danny Wilson.
Both McParland and Harford are former Lincoln City
players but only Harford is thought to have applied for
the Lincoln City job. Highly likely to join him on that
list are Curle and Wilson, especially as Curle is a
former Mansfield Town manager.
Wilson's appointment would excite the majority of clubs
in the lower leagues, hence he is in high demand. Should
he not be appointed as Notts County's manager then he
could find work with either Brentford or Hartlepool
United.
Brentford are currently seeking a new manager, and the
choice is reported to between Wilson and former QPR boss
Ian Holloway.
Wilson departed Milton Keynes Dons at the end of last
season, leaving MK Dons to find a new manager. The press
reports suggest somewhat of a coup for MK Dons who are
have identified former Brentford boss Martin Allen as the
man to take charge.
Lincoln's supporters had dismissed Allen as a contender
for The Imps' post because it was thought that the
ambitious Allen would not drop down a division. Should he
take charge at MK Dons, then that will leave Lincoln's
supporters asking: "why did he not come to Sincil
Bank?" No disrespect to MK Dons but Lincoln's fans
will struggle to see their appeal.
Allen had been strongly linked to the vacant post at
Tranmere Rovers. He failed to win this position as
Tranmere preferred to appoint Ronnie Moore, who recently
departed Oldham Athletic.
Two other managers who have quickly found work are John
Gorman and Russell Slade. Last month, Gorman left Wycombe
Wanderers while Slade quit Grimsby Town. Both Gorman and
Slade had been linked to the Lincoln job - Gorman
admitted to applying - but they are now in work at
Northampton Town and Yeovil Town respectively.
If we have made a mistake in disregarding Allen, then who
else have we overlooked? The most obvious is Holloway,
but even if Brentford opt against him, then Holloway is
being tipped to take over at Championship club Plymouth
Argyle. Tony Pullis is currently the Plymouth manager but
he is wanted by Stoke City, who are managerless.
One other piece of news is that Hull City's manager Peter
Taylor is on Crystal Palace's wanted list to fill their
vacancy. Former Sunderland manager Mick McCarthy is
already being lined-up to take over at Hull should Taylor
leave. While neither McCarthy nor Taylor are contenders
for the vacant Lincoln post, these moves could impact on
Lincoln's search because Hull's assistant-manager Colin
Murphy might end up looking for new a job. Murphy, of
course, is one of the most successful and popular
managers in the history of Lincoln City FC!
