Trinidad
Urged To Emulate Lincoln!
12th June 2006
Former Republic of Ireland striker Tony Cascarino has
urged Trinidad and Tobago's players to take a leaf out of
a former Lincoln City player's book!
In his column for today's Times newspaper, Cascarino has
related a story about a match, which he played in,
against Lincoln City. Based on the story, his advice to
Trinidad and Tobago's players is to tackle Wayne Rooney
hard. Cascarino's advice will dismay England's fans, but
he stresses that it is for the good of the country.
The logic behind Cascarino's mad advice is that several
good tackles will test whether Rooney has recovered from
his broken metatarsal bone injury. Of course, to an
England fan, it does not bear thinking about if Rooney
suffers a reaction!
Cascarino's advice is based on his own career, for when
he was 19, he suffered ankle ligament damage while
playing for Gillingham. His return to action coincided
with Gillingham playing Lincoln City in a Division 3
match.
Cascarino recalls: "A buzz was starting to develop
that I might be capable of playing at a higher level, so
opposition players knew who I was. I was just back from
injury and we played Lincoln City. A veteran Lincoln
centre back came up and asked how my ankle was. Yeah,
its all right, I said. Youre
going to find out how all right it really is
today, he said with a sneer and duly launched into
a few choice tackles from behind during the game."
Unfortunately there are no actual dates or names given by
Cascarino; the only clues are that he was a 19-year-old
Gillingham player.
From this, we can deduce that it was either Lincoln's 2-0
home victory over Gillingham on 16th January 1982 or it
was during the reverse fixture on 4th May 1982, which
Lincoln lost 1-0. During that season, Lincoln's two main
centre backs were Trevor Peake and Steve Thompson,
although neither were exactly "veteran"
players!
