Notts
County Cross Another Off Imps' List
12th June 2006
Notts County have made Lincoln City FC's chairman Steff
Wright's job of choosing a new manager slightly easier
this morning.
A morning press conference at Notts County has
unexpectedly - although there were rumours in Lincoln
over the weekend - announced that former Lincoln City
player and manager Steve Thompson is Notts County's new
manager. He has signed a three year contract with County.
Thompson had been in contention for the vacant managerial
post at Lincoln City. Meanwhile, Lincoln City are to
conduct further interviews this week and could name a new
manager on Thursday.
Thompson began his career at Sheffield United before
joining Boston United following his release from
Sheffield United. He made over 150 appearances for
Lincoln and became a vital part of The Imps' success
during the early 1980's before leaving to join Charlton.
He enjoyed success at Charlton by captaining them to
promotion to the First Division and to the Simod Cup
final.
Spells at Leicester City and Sheffield United followed
before he returned to finish his playing career at
Lincoln City. He later took over as manager from the
sacked Allan Clarke in November 1990. He lasted until May
1993 when his contract was shockingly not renewed despite
The Imps having gone from a side that were relegation
candidates in 1990 to one that just missed out on the
play-offs in 1993 by virtue of goal difference.
After leaving Lincoln, Thompson had coaching and scouting
spells at Doncaster Rovers and Newcastle United before
joining Southend in 1995, first as Director of Football
and then as caretaker manager. He turned down the offer
of the permanent post, opting to rejoin Colin Murphy as
assistant-manager at Notts County; later he was Sheffield
United's caretaker-manager.
After a lengthy spell away from football's main circle,
he made a shock comeback when he was named as Cambridge
United's manager in December 2004. At the time, Cambridge
were bottom of League Two but despite a brave effort,
their off-field problems contributed to their relegation
at the end of the 2004/05 season.
Thompson left Cambridge last summer and has recently been
employed as a commentator on Radio Lincolnshire, where he
covered Lincoln City's matches. With this experience,
Thompson was one of the strong favourites to take over at
Lincoln.
