Marvin's Macclesfield Mystery

21st June 2006

Can you say "Marvin's Maccesfield Mystery" after several pints on a Friday evening? If not, then do not worry because sober Lincoln City FC's officials are struggling to even say "Marvin Robinson" at present without spluttering!

Earlier today, Lincoln City FC believed that Robinson would renew his contract at Sincil Bank, as they claim that he "verbally agreed". Somewhere, the communication has gone very awry because Macclesfield Town have announced Robinson's signing although The Imps are stating that they have received no official word about Robinson signing for Macclesfield.

Quotes have appeared from Robinson and Macclesfield's manager Brian Horton, which give a clear indication that the striker has left Sincil Bank.

Robinson said: I'm very pleased to be joining Macclesfield Town and am already looking forward to the new season."

Meanwhile, Horton enthused: "I think he (Robinson) will be a great partner for Matty McNeil, and is exactly what we need."

Despite only being 26-years of age, Macclesfield become Robinson's twelfth club of his professional career. He began his career as a trainee at Derby County in 1998 until he was released in June 2003 after scoring once in 12 appearances. However, he did spend time on loan at Stoke City, Exeter City and Tranmere Rovers during his Derby days.

Lincoln's then manager Keith Alexander made his first attempt to sign Robinson but the striker opted for Chesterfield in summer 2003, where he stayed for a year. Overall he started 20 games for Chesterfield plus almost an equal number of substitute appearances, during which he scored 7 goals.

A two-month spell at Notts County was ended in November 2004 when he joined Rushden and Diamonds on non-contract terms; he had only made two appearances for County. In his month long stay at Rushden, he scored once in four appearances, which persuaded Walsall to give him a contract.

At Walsall, he scored four goals in 10 appearances, but left to join his fifth club of the 2004/05 season in March. This time, he signed for Stockport County but was unable to help them avoid relegation to League Two, as he only made three appearances.

Robinson signed an initial six-month contract with Lincoln City but later extended it June 2006. After a slow start to his Lincoln City career, he finished the 2005/06 season as Lincoln City FC's leading goal scorer by scoring 11 goals.

Robinson is the third Lincoln City player to leave Lincoln City for Macclesfield in similar controversial circumstances. Both Mark Bailey in June 2004 and Kevin Sandwith in July 2005 left Sincil Bank despite people being under the belief that they would renew their contracts at Lincoln City.
