New Fixtures Released

22nd June 2006

The 2006/07 season's fixtures were released at 10am this morning, although due to the Football League insisting on an expensive licence fee for their reproduction,
The Forgotten Imp is unable to copy them. However, we can highlight some key matches that Lincoln City FC's supporters can look forward.

For the second consecutive season, Lincoln City begin their campaign with a home tie. This should please the new management team of John Deehan and John Schofield, although they might have chosen different opponents.

Football fixtures have a habit of ironic twists, and many Imps' fans expected Keith Alexander's Peterborough United to be our first day opponents. It is not Peterborough United but it is the next best thing as Lincoln City will play Notts County on August 5th at Sincil Bank. Notts County narrowly escaped relegation last season and have subsequently appointed former Imps' player and manager Steve Thompson, who was overlooked for the vacant Lincoln City job in favour of Schofield.

Lincoln's first away match is at Hereford United, who are finally making their return to the Football League after several years of cruelly missing promotion from the Conference despite finishing as runners-up on each occasion.

Both games will prove a tough test for Lincoln City, as will their third match of the season, which is at Torquay United. Last season, Torquay staged a dramatic escape from relegation in the final weeks of the season, and they will be eager to keep that winning momentum going.

Older Lincoln City's supporters will also look forward to September 2nd, when Accrington Stanley travel to Sincil Bank. This season sees the return of Accrington Stanley to the Football League, although it is a different club to the one that that suffered expulsion in 1962.

The first Lincolnshire league derby match takes place on Wednesday 27th September at Boston United. Quite why such an important match has been scheduled for an ordinary Wednesday evening in September is a mystery. Thankfully, Lincoln City have been allocated the return fixture against Boston United for Boxing Day, i.e. Tuesday 26th December.

Grimsby Town visit Lincoln on Saturday 16th December, with the return fixture taking place on April 28th. This is scheduled to be Lincoln City's final away fixture of the 2006/07 season, with The Imps ending the season with a home match against Chester City on Saturday May 5th.

So the one last question that you are all asking is: "when does Alexander return to Sincil Bank?". The answer is Saturday January 27th with the fixture at Peterborough taking place on Saturday 23rd December.
