Three More
Turn Professional
6th July 2006
Three more members of last season's Lincoln City FC youth
team have accepted professional terms with The Imps. This
means that eight of the nine youth team players who were
offered contracts have accepted them.
Earlier this week, Shane Clarke, Ayden Duffy, Tom Kemp,
Phil Watt and Tom Wilkinson signed their contracts.
Yesterday, Leon Mettam, Andy Toyne and Owain Warlow
joined them in the professional ranks. Only goalkeeper
Scott Loach rejected terms, and this was because he
decided to join Watford in a £50,000 transfer from
Lincoln.
Owain Warlow is an 18-year-old left sided winger from
Treforest in Wales. The Forgotten Imp, without wanting to
create pressure on Warlow, has heard some good things
about him and he is rated as a very good prospect for the
future.
During the 2005/06 season, he spent time on work
experience at Ilkeston Town. Warlow is extremely fast and
has good skills, which are the two vital ingredients to
create the perfect winger.
Should new Head Coach John Scofield keep with his plan of
scrapping the 5-2-3 formation then, considering Lincoln
City's shortage of midfielders, this could provide an
early opportunity for Toyne or Warlow.
Toyne is a tough tackling midfielder who can also hold up
play while awaiting support. He has impressed during last
season's reserve matches where he faced seasoned
professionals on the opposing sides.
Leon Mettam is already a familiar name even if few
Lincoln City FC supporters can actually place a face to
the name.
He has already made his first team debut despite only
signing professional terms with Lincoln in July 2006. His
one first team appearance was as a substitute on January
2nd 2006 when Lincoln City visited Mansfield Town.
Perhaps more significantly, this match was Schofield's
first in charge of Lincoln City. This was the day that
former Imps' boss Keith Alexander was placed on leave,
only to return to Sincil Bank a few days later.
Schofield selected the team for Mansfield, so it should
prove to be a successful 2006/07 season for Mettam. He is
an enthusiastic player, who has great finishing. This is
an attribute that the majority of Lincoln City's strikers
lacked last season.
All eight players have signed a one year contract with
Lincoln City FC.
