Imps Face
Toughest Test
21st September 2006
Lincoln City travel to Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday for
a match that will seriously test their promotion
credentials.
This is the third of the last four matches that have/will
seriously test Lincoln City's promotion credentials.
Their first against Shrewsbury Town saw them pass via a
1-0 victory. A few days later, Lincoln City proudly
possessed the only unbeaten record inside the Football
League after defeating Macclesfield Town.
Unfortunately, this record was ended last Saturday when
Milton Keynes Dons visited Sincil Bank. Lincoln were to
fail their promotion credential test as MK Dons recorded
a 3-2 victory over The Imps. Mk Dons' tactics completely
bamboozled The Imps for significant parts of the match,
as City tried to out pass the "hit and hopers"
from Milton Keynes.
Saturday should see Lincoln face another passing team,
which should provide for an entertaining match. Wycombe
were one of the pre-season favourites for promotion - a
tag that they are living up to. They are currently on a
run of eight consecutive victories in league and cup
competitions.
Their success is built on the backbone of a side that
should have won promotion last season. Sadly, their then
manager John Gorman's personal tragedy seemingly impacted
on Wycombe and they eventually drifted out of the
promotion picture. Since last season, they have brought
in a couple of new players, most notable Portuguese
Under-21 goalkeeper Ricardo Batista, who is on loan from
Premiership club Fulham - the club whom Wycombe shocked
in Wednesday's League Cup tie via a 2-1 victory.
Lincoln City's Head Coach John Schofield has one
selection worry ahead of the game. This concerns striker
Mark Stallard, who sustained a hip injury in last week's
battle against MK Dons. As yet, it is unclear whether
Stallard will recover but it seems probable that Martin
Griton will deputise for Stallard.
These two sides first met in a Conference fixture on
November 7th 1987 when Lincoln won 2-1 at Wycombe. Please
