Imps Pay
Penalty To Grimsby
Lincoln
City 0 Grimsby Town 0 (3-5 pens)
18th October 2006
Lincoln City paid a heavy penalty for their first round
defeat in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.
Lincolnshire rivals Grimsby Town were the visitors to
Sincil Bank for an early 7.15pm kick-off. The Imps rested
five players thereby those given a start included Colin
Cryan and Leon Mettam.
Unfortunately, the match failed to live up to its derby
billing, with neither side playing particularly well.
Under new rules, Lincoln City became the first side to
lose a tie on penalties without playing extra time, as
extra time is no longer permitted in this competition.
Jamie Forrester was the player who missed Lincoln City's
crucial penalty thereby giving Grimsby a 5-3 victory on
penalties. However, facing the Grimsby penalties was
Simon Rayner, who had been a first half substitute for
injured goalkeeper Alan Marriott. The loss of Marriott
was due to an ankle injury and he now faces a race
against time to be fit for Saturday's match against
Rochdale.
